Bird hunting guides not only lead their clients on successful hunts but also work in conjunction with hunting dogs to ensure a positive hunting experience. Our hunting guide, Sam, is responsible for training and handling these dogs and incorporating them into the hunting strategy.
The German Wirehaired Pointer is a popular hunting breed known for its versatility and intelligence. These dogs have a keen sense of smell and an excellent hunting instinct, making them ideal for hunting a range of bird species. Sam raises this species of bird hunting dogs here at Wild Creek Wirehairs and he's kept busy as German Wirehaired Pointers require a significant amount of exercise, so Sam has to be prepared to provide ample opportunities for the dogs to run and play.
Sam's role as a guide also involves training and handling our resident dogs. This includes teaching them obedience and hunting skills, such as tracking, pointing, and retrieving. He must also ensure that the dogs are well-cared for and properly trained to work with clients during the hunt.
In addition, Sam must have a thorough understanding of the breed's behavior and tendencies. He must be able to read the dogs' body language to know when they have spotted birds or when they are tired and need a break. He must also ensure that the dogs are properly fed and hydrated throughout the day.
During the hunt, Sam works with the dog(s) to locate birds and flush them out for the clients to shoot. He also communicates effectively with the dogs to direct them towards the birds and ensure that they do not disturb the natural habitat.
Guides like Sam must also ensure the safety of the dogs, as they may encounter hazardous conditions, such as rough terrain or poisonous plants. He must be prepared to provide first aid or emergency care if needed.
The role of a bird hunting guide extends beyond leading clients on a successful hunt. They must also have expertise in training and handling specialized dogs and the know how to incorporate them into the hunting strategy. Sam's knowledge of the breed's behavior and tendencies is critical to ensuring a positive hunting experience for both the clients and the dogs which is always what he strives for. We are lucky to have Sam as our resident hunting guide.
